Glue evoking beer and cammraderie acquires the interior form of plastic cups, revealing the shape of the now absent container. Metaphorically, the question of container and the contained parallels the elusive relaionship between words and meaning. Talking, Not Shown focuses on the non-verbal connective elements of conversation. When the container, language, is removed, the substance being communicated and the sensibility of that communication persists.

Comprised of three elements functioning on contradictory perceptual levels, Si plays with the notion of self-definition and boundaries and addresses ideas of expansion. Homasote outlined in vibrant green is fractured, and the pieces are arranged along the edges of a larger rectangle painted directly on the wall. This painted rectangle evokes both the texture of the homasote and the quality of pealed wall. Candy colored yarn outlines a yet larger rectangle. The fracturing of the homasote asserts the destruction engendered by expansion, and that very destruction is subsumed by growth, progress and the excitement of our dreams and plans.
Square II, 2006 Homasote, polyurethane glue, paint, chalk, hooks 38 1/2 x 38 1/4 in.
Misleadingly simple, Square II functions on contradictory perceptual levels, playfully addressing ideas of fracture, assemblage and self-presentation. Square II consists of a square piece of homasote, fractured and glued together. A golden square the size of the original square and the color of the glue is painted over the assembled pieces. The extra bits that extend past the original dimensions are painted the wall color (white). An illusionistic shadow under the golden square and support hooks driven through the extra white bits reinforce the dimensionality of the golden square and negation of the extra bits. While ostensibly exploring fracture this piece ultimately expresses assertion.

The woman and camera reflected in the mirror of Time/Temperer are seen the where we expect to see our reflection and lie behind pooling glue that holds the mirror pieces together. Our eyes alternate between seeing the broken mirror, the semen like glue, and the woman. The layered forces of re-generation, sex, vanitas and time co-mingle in this work.

Garden relies on the visceral and physical and it is our intellectual understanding of abstract painting that complicates our perception of these unmediated, direct works. The use of paint remover adds metaphorical resonance.
